Why Do We Wear Rings?
How many rings do you own? Some would say two, their engagement ring and wedding band, but are you one who would say they own many and would have to count them? Rings are worn for many reasons. Sentimental, handed down, a gift, religious, fashionable. Then you either like gold, silver, platinum, bronze, stainless steel, resin, or wood, the materials are endless, real gemstones, diamonds, fake gems, no gems, quirky, vintage, traditional, large rings, small rings, stackable rings, enviable rings.
There are trends with rings like clothes. It is fashionable to have a ‘Toi er Moi’ (You and me) French style engagement ring, rings with coloured stones instead of the traditional diamond and tilted stones. Diamonds are being set in chunky masculine style settings, where the metal is more prominent than the stone. Diamond engagement rings didn't become popular until 1947 when De Beers (the British Company that mined diamonds in South Africa) launched an advertising campaign with the help of Hollywood stars and the slogan ‘A diamond is forever'. Diamond engagement rings sales rocketed after this.
Wearing stone set rings every day is sometimes not practical. Whether your preference is silver, gold, rose gold, or platinum there are many styles of sculptured rings to choose from. Silver is said to represent wisdom, purity, serenity, and tranquillity. Gold represents love, illumination, positivity, passion, wealth, prosperity, glamour, and grandeur. Platinum represents true love, strength, purity, rarity, and everlasting love.
It is said that you can wear a silver ring on any finger except the index finger as this finger represents the planet Jupiter and its corresponding metal is gold. Traditionally silver has to be worn on your dominant hand as this is said to help your temper and refine your actions. Who knew?
The last few years have seen the trend of stacking rings grow in popularity. The choice of rings is immense. Stack new rings with ones you already own. Stack gemstones with plain sculptured metals, mix metals, the combinations are endless. Like stacking your bracelets and bangles, stacking your rings is a way to express your style.
